Asbestos has not yet been banned in the United States. Its use is regulated, but it is still used in products today. Asbestos has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a human carcinogen. This assessment is supported by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), both of which believe that the future use of asbestos should be banned.
EPA Superfund Cleanup
The U.S. EPA has cited one Minnesota location for asbestos contamination in its Superfund program for hazardous waste cleanup: the Western Mineral Products Site in Northeast Minneapolis. According to EPA documentation, the industrial property was purchased in 1963 by W.R. Grace Co. to manufacture vermiculite insulation. The asbestos-heavy vermiculite came from the famous Libby, MT vermiculite mines that were operated by the same company. The former facility, which operated for 50 years, used to freely offer piles of waste rock to local residents, who may have used it for numerous household applications. The industrial property’s current owners are participating in a voluntary cleanup, and the EPA has cleaned up roughly 260 area homes identified as having “Libby asbestos.”1,2 In 2008, the EPA also tested the air in those homes for asbestos fibers.3

Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma Explained
Asbestos is made up of teeny fibers which can break apart and get into your lungs. Even if you were exposed 30 years ago, the symptoms may have only develop recently. This is why there have been so many instances of mesothelioma and asbestos related disease in the past decade.
Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that can strike the stomach, the heart and the lungs. Pleural mesothelioma affects your lungs and results in symptom such as chest pain, shortness of breath and coughing up blood. Pericardial mesothelioma is the term of cancer that affects your area around the heart. Symptoms include irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath and chest pain. Peritoneal mesothelioma impacts your stomach area and the lower abdomen including your liver and intestines and includes symptoms of sudden weight loss, abdominal pain and anemia among many other symptoms.
Risk Factors of Mesothelioma
If you are experiencing any of these painful symptoms then it is a good idea to get checked out by your doctor. You may not even realize that you have been exposed to asbestos in the past as it was once used in many popular household products including:
Insulation for buildings. The Department of Health is constantly on the lookout for buildings where asbestos may be present but often it is too late.
Cigarette filters
Pipes and engine parts

Brake pads and other mechanical parts
